Journal two entry one

  1. something that I found surprising about my research would include how many people deal with depression and anxiety at a young age. I knew a lot of people deal with depression but I didn’t realize how the younger generation is affected by it. I found a lot of studies different colleges dis that showed information about how social media is affecting students and how allot of them feel like they are overwhelmed because of social media.
  2. something that was unsettling was how many kids are affected by social media. social media makes us feel connected by can make people feel depressed based on what they see. The more time kids spend on social media the more likely they are to become of higher risk of suicide and depression.
  3. I am still interested in writing about my topic. I want to learn more about mental health and how it effects the younger generation. Mental health has aways interested me and I’ve wanted to know more about it.
  4. people should care about my topic because it effects a lot of people especially kids in school (high school and college). Everyone needs to have good mental health and social media is effecting everyone that uses it.
  5. I want my reader to understand that social media might not be as good as people say. Social media has positives and negatives that make people feel bad about themselves.

Julie ross’s essay

  • she introduces the topic in a good way
  • she gives some stats based on research she did
  • she put some direct quotes into her essay
  • she gave some reasons for the rise in teardowns, which shows that she is providing background to her essay.
  • she provided a works Cited with every source she used to write this essay

how has your understanding of your topic and the issue you want to argue changed due to your research?

  • My argument has changed a little based on the research I have found. I am changing it to be more about high school and college students mental health and how social media has affect that.

Next, I’d like to type out examples of where Julie uses a direct quote; a paraphrase; and a summation. Then answer this question: What’s the effect on you, as a reader, when you see information from either primary or secondary sources presented in a variety of ways, that is, what does it make you think or feel about Julie and her credibility?

  • “even as the average household shrunk from 3.4 to 2.6 people” (Brown 23)
  • “Buildings [residential and commercial combined] take up rather more than half of all our energy use: they add more to the pollution of the atmosphere than transport and manufacture combined.”
  • “From 1985 to 2002, total residential energy consumption per capita climbed eight percent, and residential consumption for the nation—the figure most relevant to global effects like carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions—climbed 32 percent” (Brown 23).
  • Jessie Sackett, a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, writes: “Owning a home is the cornerstone of the American dream. Recently, however, we’ve realized that keeping that dream alive for future generations means making some changes to how we live today” (36)

When I see information from primary or secondary sources presenting in different ways it makes me think that she put in a lot of effort and she knows what she is talking about.

The point of this journal/essay is two help parents deal with how social media is effected the young generation. The topics that are covered include how social media effects everyone and how parents are afraid to teach their kids how to use social media. There are pros and cons to social media. Parents need to stop being afraid of what tech kids use now, technology is everywhere now and young kids are now having their own technology.

This is a good and useful source. It doesn’t have as much information as in my other sources. This information seems reasonable and reliable. This essay seems to be objective. Doctor Sunita, someone who knows a lot about social media and how it effects children, states that “she recommends that parents and caregivers careful review this document and develop their own family media plan for their children.” The goal of this source is to help parents out and make sure that we know what to do when it comes to social media and mental health.

This essay fits into my research for my topic. This source was helpful and fit my research topic. It helps shape my argument that social media is everywhere now and its hard to show how social media effects people. I can use this source to help state that social media effects people and its worse when little kids start using social media. This source has showed me that social media is started at younger ages every year.

one in eight children and young people suffer from some sort of mental health condition. Technology has been useful and ubiquitous in society, it helps us with life. There are social media, mobile apps, and online platforms which are accessible for young people to use.

Technology has effected everyone, it has made the world worse. technology can help but it can also be bad for young peoples brains and mental health. Social media has been tested to give mental health deterioration in young people.

This was a good essay/journal. It talks about what I want my essay too be about. The author included interview, involvement, participates, and analysis. These helped keep the information all together and made it sound educational.

over two million people use social media on the regular. social media has been shown to reveal different health signals. A study showed that social media has identified some medical conditions. The results of this study, showed that 21 medical condition categories were predictable from Facebook. Social media has an advantage that is built in the communication channel between doctors and patients.

This journal was okay. it really only talked about how social media is helping with health conditions. The study had some limitations, social media captures emotional patterns, cognitive, behavioral, and environmental markets.

this essay didn’t really go with what I wanted my assignment to be about. I should have picked a different journal that was more about mental health and how it effects people.

      • Cyberbullying on social media has a strong correlation to causes of suicide among adolescents and young adults. • The rapid growth of social media over the last decade has established an entirely new medium for human interaction. Online platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have allowed people in every corner of the world to be connected 24/7. By 2021, it is forecast that there will be around 3 billion active monthly users of social media. From the statistics alone, it’s clear that social media has become an integral (and to a large extent, unavoidable) part of our lives.
